Millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains throughout the world celebrate Diwali, a five-day festival of lights. In Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, Diwali means “row of lights.” Food, fireworks, colored sand, and unique candles and lamps are all part of the festivities. Diwali’s tale is viewed differently depending on where people live. One of the reasons why people burn oil lamps during Diwali is because it is a celebration of fresh beginnings and the victory of good vs evil and the lightness over the dark.
During Diwali, people create Rangolis, which are attractive designs made out of colored powders and flowers. They are drawn or painted near their dwellings’ entrances to greet the gods and bring good luck!
